The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) won critical exemptions to the DMCA anticircumvention, carving out new legal protections for consumers who modify their cell phones.

The exemptions were granted as part of a statutorily prescribed rulemaking process, conducted every three years to mitigate the danger the DMCA poses to legitimate, non-infringing uses of copyrighted materials. The DMCA prohibits “circumventing” digital rights management (DRM) and “other technical protection measures” used to control access to copyrighted works. While the DMCA still chills competition, free speech, and fair use, today’s exemptions take unprecedented new strides towards protecting more consumers and artists from its extensive reach.

The first of EFF’s successful request clarifies the legality of cell phone “jailbreaking” — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker. More than a million iPhone owners are said to have “jailbroken” their handsets in order to change wireless providers or use applications obtained from sources other than Apple’s own iTunes “App Store,” and many more have expressed a desire to do so. But the threat of DMCA liability had previously endangered these customers and alternate applications stores.

White iPhone 4 delayed again until later this year

Here is a bad news for the folks that are waiting for white iPhone 4. Apple just issued a statement “White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.”

So either you order a black iPhone 4 or wait till late this year for a white one.

Skype for iPhone has just updated to version 2.1 and now it Run in the background with multitasking in iOS4. Receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when your iPhone is locked. You can also continue your call while you switch to another application. Multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

This HP Slate 500 is powered by Windows 7 Premium gives, 8.9″ touch screen with stylus, two cameras (video and still) but no word on battery life. It has exclusive HP software gives you access to photos, videos and everything on the Internet with just a touch and it has ability to adjust the screen orientation to fit your content and use the pen to write or draw as if on a piece of paper.

Will this product compete the iPad the leading product by apple?

Apple is Now checking Soft SHSH Blob

The Iphone Dev team reported on their blog that with iOS 4 and iOS 4.0.1. Apple has started a soft SHSH blob check for 3G and ipod touch 2nd generation, this means if the singing windows is closed while restoring, iTune gives error.

But dont worry folks cydia is now saving SHSH for both iphone 3G and ipod toch 2nd generation so you can restore when you want, according to DevTeam as this is a soft SHSH blob check it can be easily bypassed by redsn0w or PwnageTool.

“Those of you with jailbroken iPhone3G and ipt2G devices may now have noticed Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That’s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a “soft” SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can’t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it’s “soft” in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don’t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).

Furthermore, since the 3.x IPSWs for these devices don’t enforce it, you can always restore to 3.x IPSWs outside of any signing windows.

So, Cydia is doing this to allow you to continue to use iTunes to restore to 4.x on iPhone3G and ipt2g outside of Apple’s signing window without needing to use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get around Apple’s annoying new restriction.”
